FrontDesk is a behavioral health screening
software developed by JLWA for Indian
health care (primary care, emergency care,
and other settings). Patients use a touch
screen kiosk to privately answer standardized
screening questions about tobacco use,
alcohol use, depression, domestic violence,
and/or substance use as they wait for their
appointments. FrontDesk allows each health
care site to customize its screenings. A
health care site can use FrontDesk to screen
for one (1) or all of the behavioral health
problems. In addition, FrontDesk automatically
scores the results of each screening and
provides a detailed report. The reports are
stored in the FrontDesk database at each
health care site. The reports are available in
real time so that providers can deliver brief
intervention and/or referral services during the
patient visit. FrontDesk meets Government
Performance Results Acts (GPRA) reporting
standards and requirements and offers Indian
health care programs the opportunity to screen
every patient in a consistent manner, no
matter the size or number of sites or staff.

Benefits
Every patient is screened the same way:
When all patients are screened the same way,
they begin to expect the screening and become
comfortable with the process. This also increases
the likelihood of accurate self-reporting and
reduces stigma and sensitivity around behavioral
health issues.
Every patient is screened using
standardized tools:
FrontDesk uses standardized behavioral health
screening tools, which were designed as
self-report questionnaires. These tools are
widely used in health care settings, and have
been tested and validated to have high levels of
reliability.
Improve GPRA performance:
FrontDesk screen patients for all four (4) of the
behavioral health measures (tobacco cessation
counseling, alcohol use, depression, and domestic
violence) required by the Government
Performance Results Act (GPRA). FrontDesk
can reduce the time staff spends on the
behavioral health screenings, and creates an
opportunity to screen all patients, no matter how
busy the health center is..

IHS Awards Funding to Build API
This year, the Indian Health Service awarded
funding for JLWA to build an application
programming interface (API) between FrontDesk
and the IHS Resource Patient Management
System/Electronic Health Record (RPMS/EHR).
The API will allow the screening results to be
electronically exported from the FrontDesk
database to the RPMS/EHR without any manual
data entry.
