JLWA worked with the Indian Alcoholism Commission of California (IACC) and the Indian Health Service to help make IACC a self-sustaining business. The new IACC (soon to be called AACCT) will offer general certification to the public, while maintaining special certification for American Indian counseling.
IACC is a non-profit corporation that has provided alcohol and other drug (AOD) counselor certification in California since 1972. IACC was created in response to the increasing accountability required by the State of California and the Indian Health Service to ensure that qualified counselors were available to deliver services in Indian health care programs in state and federal jurisdictions. Today, IACC is one (1) of 10 counselor certifying organizations recognized by the State of California. IACC is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), the National Organization for Competency Assurance (NOCA), and the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC). IACC is the only group that certifies counselors in American Indian cultural approaches.
Some of the changes that are being made include: 1) changing the IAAC name; 2) revising fees, qualification, and membership standards; 3) revising website content/design and other publication materials; 4) creating an American Indian counselor certification as a specialty; and 5) promoting the new organization to the general public.
